DMV Holiday Traditions
The 2017 Holiday season is here! If you’re looking for fun activities to enjoy during the holiday season, check out these DMV holiday traditions:
ICE!
Head over to the Gaylord National Resort and enjoy their ICE! Exhibit. Comprised of 5,000 blocks of ice, this winter wonderland weighs a total of 1.5 million pounds. Each piece of ice is hand-sculpted by one of 40 artisans from all over the world. This year’s theme is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. While you’re there, enjoy the hot chocolate stand, Christmas town center, a carousel ride, and more.
Candlelight Tour
There is so much history and beauty within the DMV area. There are many charming homes throughout the cities and suburbs and the candlelight tour encourages its visitors to slow down and enjoy a piece of history. You can find candlelight tours in Frederick, MD, Alexandria, VA, Northwest DC, and other areas. Enjoy delicious treats, Christmas décor, and great conversation.
DMV Holiday Traditions: National Christmas Tree
One perk of living in this area is that the nation’s capital comes alive during the holidays, and the National Christmas Tree is no exception. Enjoy the tree as well as the Pathway of Peace. Both are lit at dusk and stay lit until 10:00 pm. Depending on the night and time you go, enjoy live music by local artists and carolers.
Christmas Lights
Lights are special when you’re preparing for the holidays. Beautiful lights usually line homes within neighborhoods and busy streets in the cities. However, many local parks go the extra mile and set up beautiful lights for guests to enjoy from the comfort of their cars. The Parade of Lighted Boats, Winter Lights at Seneca Creek State Park, and the Winter Festival of Lights at Watkins Regional Park are some of the most popular options.
DMV Holiday Traditions: Holiday Toy Train Exhibit
Who can turn down a delightful toy train? Whether you have little or want to enjoy the wonder for yourself, toy train exhibits are held across the region. Visit the Norwegian Christmas Train Display at Union Station. Seasons Greetings from the Botanical Garden has its own outdoor train. The Garden Railway Exhibit, at the Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, MD, is a seasonal display with exclusive toy train models. The National Capital Trolley Museum, located in Colesville, MD, offers their signature garden railway and village (with a small fee).
